What an Honor

Those who have been there can relate to the stress the family feels on completing an eagle project. Let me just say that when you have a kid do it with 3 weeks left till his 18th birthday the stress is multiplied by 10 no maybe 100. We are so proud of Javier for making the decision to follow through in his scout commitment and completing his eagle requirements. I have to say that the actual day of the eagle project was so much fun. I got to laugh and rub shoulders with some pretty amazing leaders. Poor Mr. D had to work and couldn't get the day off due to the last minute planning. We pretty much finalized everything about three days before the actual project kicked off.
The struggle was that the guy originally set up to donate the 22 bags of cement fell through days before the event leaving Javier in a scramble. It was a true test of his leadership skills and ability to adjust to the challenge. He ended up earning enough to cover the cost after LOWES hardware donated half of the needed bags. We are so grateful to the many generous people out in the world who really make an effort to support our eagle candidates.

His project was to build a retaining wall to the specifications of the local ranger. This is what the area looked like when we started.

We had many people turn out to help Javier accomplish his task. It was a great community event.

Javier had people cutting, jack-hammering, digging, signing in, working the cement mixer, talking or eating at our food table.

This is a classic photo. Javier even has his head cocked to the side.. I guess they do listen sometimes after all.

Turns out we had too many bags of cement and hauling them back up the hill was a challenge for us weaker ones. ;) but we were able to donate them to the next eagle project.

then it was time to sign out as the project came to a close. Thanks to everyone who attended!

Sometimes best friends can help bring the goofy fun side out after a long day of hard work and a week of stress. Javier's shoulders feel a lot lighter now that it's over, I am sure.

Even Ranger Carol was impressed and signed off on the project. Not all great walls were built in a day but this one was.

The time came to pack up and call it a day.

We really enjoyed ourselves and feel so overjoyed to witness Javier use his leadership skills in overcoming many different obstacles throughout the day. At one point he had no generator to power the tools needed but a solution was reached and the project went on.

Days later he completed his Eagle project book that detailed the events on this journey and out the door he went to turn it in and await for his Eagle board of Review.

There he will be added to many others who chose to embark on a scouting journey and reap the benefits of this high honor. Congratulations Javier!! Know we are here to support you on all your adventures especially if they are as fun as this was..
